Neriah
neh-RY-uh · means “Lamp of Yahweh”
Neriah means "lamp of Yahweh" in Hebrew. In Scripture, Neriah was the father of Baruch, the scribe who faithfully wrote down Jeremiah's prophecies (Jeremiah 32:12). Neriah himself is only briefly mentioned, but his name has become a popular modern choice, especially for girls, valued today mostly for its warm meaning and sound.
“I gave the deed to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.”
The story behind the name
Neriah appears in Jeremiah as the father of Baruch, described as "son of Neriah" at the moment Jeremiah entrusts Baruch with a deed of purchase for land, a small act of hope in the middle of Jerusalem's coming destruction (Jeremiah 32:12-14).
Baruch went on to serve as Jeremiah's faithful scribe through years of danger, writing down the prophet's words even when kings burned the scrolls and sought Jeremiah's life (Jeremiah 36). Neriah's own legacy is quiet but real: he raised a son who stayed faithful under real pressure.
Today Neriah has become a genuinely popular modern name, especially for girls, chosen mainly for the warmth of its meaning rather than its more obscure biblical mention. A child named Neriah carries a name that means lamp of the Lord, light passed down through a faithful, if lesser known, family line.
A blessing to pray over Neriah
Lord, let this child carry Your light faithfully, like a lamp that does not go out. Give them a quiet, steady faith that holds firm under pressure. Amen.
