Salome

suh-LOH-mee · from Shelomit · means Peace

Salome is a Hebrew name meaning "peace," related to shalom. She was one of the faithful women who watched Jesus's crucifixion from a distance and came to anoint his body on Easter morning, becoming one of the first witnesses of the empty tomb (Mark 15:40-41, Mark 16:1).

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body.
Mark 16:1 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Salome appears by name at two of the most important moments in the Gospels. She stood among the women watching from a distance as Jesus was crucified, women who had followed him and cared for his needs all through Galilee (Mark 15:40-41). She did not run when the crowd scattered.

Many interpreters, comparing the Gospel accounts, believe this Salome was the wife of Zebedee and mother of James and John, and some have further identified her as a sister of Mary, the mother of Jesus, though Scripture itself does not state this outright. What is certain is her devotion: she was one of the women who bought spices to anoint Jesus's body and came to the tomb at sunrise on the first day of the week (Mark 16:1).

Salome's faithfulness did not depend on understanding everything that was happening. She simply stayed close, kept showing up, and was rewarded with being among the first to learn that the tomb was empty. A daughter named Salome carries a name of peace and a story of quiet, unshakable loyalty.
